STCC heats up in penultimate race of 2016

2016-08-31

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship heats up in the penultimate race weekend of 2016 at Solvalla in the Swedish capital Stockholm where Polestar Cyan Racing team-mates Richard Göransson and Robert Dahlgren are entangled in a tough title fight.

There are just eleven points between the two ahead of this weekend with championship leader Göransson taking nothing for granted.

”It is going to be a hard fight. The key thing at Solvalla is to get the tyres working with the available grip level as the surface changes a lot. My plan is just to head there and do the best possible job, things can change really fast in the STCC as we have already seen this year,” said Göransson.

Dahlgren gained a lot of ground on team-mate Göransson in the previous race, reducing the gap from 47 to just eleven points.

”It is a special situation, we are working together during a race weekend to get the car as fast as possible at the same time as we race against each other. But we have both raced for a long time and I have no doubt that we can handle this professionally. I am really eager to head to Solvalla, despite carrying most weight of all, to get as many points as possible,” said Dahlgren.

Prince Carl Philip left the previous race at Karlskoga with two points finishes, something he hopes to repeat this weekend.

”Solvalla is really a unique challenge and my goal for the weekend is to score points in both races, as we did at Karlskoga three weeks ago,” said Prince Carl Philip.

While the current championship standings have Göransson and Dahlgren separated by eleven points, the real distance is likely to be closer as all drivers have to remove one race weekend before the final race weekend. As it currently stands, Dahlgren would be just five points behind his team-mate.

”We look forward to an exciting final stretch of the championship and there are another 150 points left to fight for, so we can by no means relax. Robert and Richard’s ultimate goal is to win both titles for Polestar Cyan Racing. Who comes out on top in between the two is a luxury item at this point. We care for them both equally and hopefully we can have them sort that part in a “may the best man win” finale at Knutstorp in a few weeks,” said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar.

STCC races at the trotting track Solvalla this weekend that is prepared for racing each year uniquely for this event, measuring just 1250 meters.
